How can you make sure failing an airline selection process doesn’t happen to you?
“Once you’re invited you are halfway there”… Right? You’ve probably heard that line before. And today, there’s some truth to it. Compared to a few years ago, the job market is more open than ever. Airlines are actively hiring again and there are real opportunities out there. But even now, simply being qualified doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the job. Airline selection processes are still competitive. Recruiters still expect you to bring much more to the table than just a pilot license and if you’re relying on collected flight hours or basic knowledge alone, you’re still at risk of falling short.
Why do so many candidates get rejected?
If you’ve attended a selection process, one of these responses below may sound painfully familiar. If you even received feedback at all of course…
– “You passed the selection process, but due to the high amount of candidates we’ve added you to the holding pool.”
– “You seem like a good candidate, but we’re looking for someone more flexible.”
– “We didn’t feel you showed enough motivation to become a pilot at our airline.”
You might think: How could I not be motivated? I’ve spent €150000 on training, traveled for this assessment and I am ready to relocate tomorrow!
But this isn’t about how you feel, it’s about how well you communicate those things to the recruiters while being under pressure. Recruiters compare you to dozens (sometimes hundreds) of others. If your passion, flexibility and preparation don’t clearly stand out, someone else will.
Luck plays a small role
Yes, some things are out of your control. Your interview might be scheduled last in the day, after recruiters already made their shortlist. You might be paired with someone who hasn’t flown in years and drags down the sim session. These things happen. But the better prepared you are, the less luck matters.
When you know what’s coming and how to handle every stage with confidence, you give yourself the best possible shot, regardless of the circumstances.
It’s not always about you
This part stings, but it’s true. Some airlines run selections knowing they won’t actually hire anyone, at least not yet. It’s often about building a database. Some invite 500 people, charge a fee to apply (you all know which airline we’re talking about here) and end up offering contracts to just 5 people. The process is part business, part selection. And while that can feel unfair, it’s also a reminder: you shouldn’t always take rejection personally. What you can do is stay ready, so when the real opportunity comes, you’re the one who stands out!
The real reason why pilots don’t pass

Most are trained to fly, but that’s only a small part of what airlines are looking for. Your ATPL knowledge should be on point and you need to clearly express why you’re the right fit for the company.
